YouTube for Teachers

YouTube is one of the best online education sites on the Internet. The problem has been that YouTube is also filled with every kind of video, from sublime lectures by some of the great minds of the century to the bone snapping stunts of marginally sane teens, to the grungy mumblings of the fringe. It's like much of the Internet: a mixed bag of nuts with some real gems if you know how to find them.

Many school districts ban the use of YouTube because it is easier to just say no and cover your liability than spending the time to evaluate content and use a great resource the kids already have after school (and on their phone) access too in the first place.

YouTube has taken steps to create a safe silo of content for teachers everywhere. Other services like TeacherTube and Schooltube have been providing this service as well.

Let's hope that creating YouTube Teachers (http://www.youtube.com/teachers) will make it easier for someone in a district office to punch the filter button and let the video stream.

All of my life I've wanted education to be more like what's described in this video. I count myself fortunate that I'm still able to get into the flow when learning, teaching, reading, and researching online. In many ways the Internet and the Information Fluency skills I've developed over the past decade have guaranteed me a ticket to ride (the flow that is).

One of the things that promotes flow is listening to music as you work. More often than not I've moved into the deep concentration and mental focus I think of as Flow while listening to music. When this happens I've learned to appreciate the moment and go with it.

Can school be like this?

When I was in school, you didn’t have many one-on-one conversations with your teachers. Your teachers spoke to you, they didn’t speak with you. Here, they do oral exams, they talk with the kids, they really get to know each student.”
- By having this type of learning, we are able to still have a family life. We have the ability to travel when we want to and choose our time. You can’t do that in traditional schools. Our kids have had the opportunity to go places and see things that other students don’t get to.
- With online learning, when you get it, you can move on. When you don’t get it, you can get extra tutoring help and teachers will walk you through it. If you’re sick for a couple of days, you can do your work over the weekend when you feel better. You’re not missing anything.
- My kids are very self-paced because they’ve always been homeschooled, but I think if a child was not so motivated, it would be a bit of a challenge to keep up.

Tip #2: Copy text formatting: When using Microsoft Word, Control+Shift+C copies the formatting of highlighted text. Next, highlight the text area where you would like to apply the formatting, and then press Control+Shift+V. (On a Mac, use the Command key instead of Control).

Mac Tips:
Tip #1. Use Click + Spacebar to quickly preview files: On the Mac desktop or in a window, click once to highlight a file name, then tap the spacebar once. This gives a quick document preview without opening the program. If you select multiple documents by Shift- clicking on each item, then tapping the spacebar, you get a slideshow. Tap the spacebar again to close. (Mac OS 10.5 and above)

Tip #2. Press Command + (Command key and the “plus” key) to quickly enlarge the items on a Web page in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.

CSU System Adopts Moodle LMS Services
The California State University system is providing new learning management system support options to its 23 campuses. Through a new agreement with Moodlerooms, campuses will be offered the option of adopting the open source Moodle virtual learning environment and will be provided with hosting, training, and other support services. In addition to Moodle, the CSU system is also offering a similar service to schools that adopt Angel LMS, a commercial learning management system.

Kay Lehmann and Lisa Chamberlin the outstanding online instructors who teach the University of Wisconsin Stout's Creating Collaborative Communities in E-learning, created a one-stop page for advice and tips on: Time Management Strategies for Online Instructors.

Kay and Lisa are also the authors of How to Be a Great Online Teacher and Making the Move to eLearning: Putting Your Course Online.

You know the old joke: Those that really need time management help are too busy to find it! It's sad but true. Teaching online is a lot like juggling. You have to keep so many technologies, ideas, students, and deadlines in the air at once that sometimes just a momentary lapse of concentration can knock you flat.

Tech Tip: Free Screen Sharing in Skype

Skype has recently added a screen-sharing feature which makes it easy to share what’s on your computer screen with someone miles away. The person with whom you are sharing your screen can see your screen in either full or partial screen view. You can continue talking via Skype while sharing your screen.

To share your Skype screen:(Macintosh & Windows) During a Skype call, go to the Call menu in the Skype menu bar and selectShare screen.

Screen sharing is available in Skype 2.8 for Mac and Skype 4.1 for Windows. If the person you are calling is on an older version of Skype, they can view your screen but can't share their own.

I'm describing myself in the opening paragraph. I was a veteran teacher fast approaching my 50's with 25 years in the classroom. As I commuted to work I'd ask myself is this where I'll be next year? At anchor in a beautiful place, with gorgeous but limited horizon line. In my case I was focused on a single question: Did I want to circle the wagons and wait it out until I could retire, while my love for teaching was chipped away a day at a time, or did I want to take a chance on a new future?

I set a goal to go back to school when I turned 50. My plan was to be making my living online within five years. It happened withing two. It may be a cliche, but my dreams became goals, and my goals have been more than fulfilled, thanks to teaching and learning online. Successful Techniques and Proven Strategies for Finding Online Work.

Searching for online work requires a plan, perseverance, and organization. An adjunct instructor is both a teacher and a business person. Ongoing search for work is part of the profession. This article will help you pursue your goals in a methodical and effective manner.

As an adjunct, you'll have great flexibility as well as the responsibility for maximizing your own efficiency. It's likely you'll have multiple jobs with different deadlines. This is a good thing. Rather than have all of your work with one client, seek to diversify into many jobs. It's important to work with many clients because you are increasing your opportunities for new classes. Another advantage of not having all your eggs in one basket is you protect yourself against the effects of loosing a job.

Find the Jobs:

Many online jobs come from your network of friends and professional colleagues. I've written extensively on the importance of networking. You should also be aware of what's available in your current place of employment. However, you also need to pursue a more direct and generalized job search.

Find online instructors and look at their homepages. Watch for links to their places of employment. Another approach is to use the following websites to find schools that are offering online programs. From there click through to the school's homesite and begin investigating the programs and courses that they offer.

Apply for work:

Craft an introductory email. Be sure to provide information about your qualifications. Be sure to list the courses you are qualified to teach in your introductory e-mail.

Mention specific courses offered by the school you are applying to. Be sure to include the school's course numbers. Make it seem that you are focused just on their school, even if you are applying to multiple employers.

Find your way to the Universities contact page. Follow the HR application procedures specified on each website, but take it a step further. Include a cover letter detailing your qualifications and the specific classes your are qualified to teach. Include your Curriculum Vitae. The problem with the standard 'HR' route is lack of visibility with the decision makers. Your application could end up in a database or at the bottom of an unprocessed pile of forms.

Double your chances bye going directly to the department level. You will need to research the academic heirachy of the departments that offer the classes you wish to teach. Find the email addresses so you can write the department chairpersons and school deans.

Send an email with a formal introduction to the decision makers. Address them at Doctor (just assume they have a terminal degree).

Be sure subject line of your email is consise and indicates you are job hunting. Consider: Seeking Online Position, Adjunct E-learning Professional, Referral, Online Teaching Position.

Bcc yourself on all applications. Keep these copies organized. It may take months to ge a response, so be sue you have the history of correspondence organized. Some compile a spreadsheet, other organized by file folders or tags. Develop a method and maintain it!

Bcc the dean of the department when you write the department chair. (Double cover your bases, it can't hurt.)

Be Prepared to respond quickly and professionally

Keep electronic copies of all your transcripts. This is especially important for your most recent degree.
Keep on hand, the addresses you'll need to request official transcripts.
Have an updated and expanded curriculum vitae. This is more than a one page business style resume. Academic CV's should be complete and extensive.
A generic cover letter you can tune to the employer's interests.
A reference list. Be sure to have at least three professional references. Also be sure to informA your references in advance with note that they may be contacted.
A list of the specific courses you want to teach at the university you are corresponding with.
An online portfolio or teaching website you maintain regularly.
A statement of your teaching philosophy. Write two tight paragraphs about how and why you teach.

The tutorials try not to assume too much previous knowledge and are presented for the pragmatical and not necessarily tech-savy users (Moodle purists please excuse). They are a bit like that product I got the pun from - something quick and simple to get you going.

8 Online Discussion Response Techniques

Online discussion is the heart of a community of practice oriented e-learning course. However, it can be difficult to know how to respond.

It's a good idea to think in terms of value added responses. What can you add to advance the discussion?

I like to post the following list at the top of discussion forums in my online courses. It's a good reminder and a handy reference!

Here are some suggestions to help guide you as you respond to each other in discussion forums.

Suggested Techniques for Response :

Expand on the topic.
Provide a teaching story that illustrates the main idea.
Offer a different perspective.
Provide an online resource relevant to the topic (include a hyperlink).
Offer a method you use in your classroom.
Provide a summary of the ideas posted so far (good when you come late to the conversation).
Ask a specific question (but avoid prompting yes or no answers).
Ask an open ended (on topic) question.

The netiquette of online discussion:

Focus on the prompt. Be sure to follow the directions in the prompt closely.
Respond to those who respond to you! This is essential!
Don't depend on "Me too" or "I agree" posts. Make your posts substantial
Work to respond with something that adds value to the discussion.
Post early in the week. You'll get more response and become more engaged in conversation.
Avoid doing all of your posting at the end of the week. You miss out on interaction.
Use direct quotations from the text. Include the Name of the text and page number. (Remember not everyone has the same text.)

Purpose & Objectives For most students, online research just doesn’t come naturally. Locating relevant information is not easy. Determining if the information is credible is even harder and requires investigative skills to evaluate sources. The purpose of this session is to provide participants with an understanding of efficient methods for evaluating online information and to demonstrate effective ways to teach these information fluency skills in classrooms. The new generation of NETS standards for students (ISTE, 2007), is based on the premise that efficacy and productivity depends on students’ abilities to conduct research and manage digital information fluently. An essential skill is the ability to evaluate information from a variety of sources and media. This session directly addresses this information fluency standard by helping participants… 1. Understand the role of investigation (information forensics) in evaluating information: • Two types of searching: how investigation differs from speculation; • Determining when investigative searching is necessary and when it is not; • Effective means of finding critical information with limited clues; • Using specialized search engines and browsing techniques to track down information; • Analyzing results to determine credibility of the source and content. 2. Observe effective methods for helping students exercise speculative search skills: • Off-line 'readiness' activities; • Group and individual Search Challenges; • Interactive tutorial games; • Think-aloud searches; • Evaluation reporting; • Group discussion about credibility. In 1995, groundbreaking work in technology infused interdisciplinary teaching led to a Milken National Educator Award. After working online with the ISTE, National Educational Technology Standards Project in 1998, Mr. O'Connor became a project writer developing units of practice for ISTE-NETS, Connecting Curriculum and Technology. Dennis remains active as a subject matter expert, standards review consultant and project writer for ISTE. Dennis previously worked as a Senior eLearning Architect for the 21st Century Information Fluency Program, which is sponsored by the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. He also teaches online professional development classes for the 21st Century Information Project and for the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he is the program advisor for the E-learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program. Last year, Carl and Dennis presented a similar lecture at NECC in San Antonio and the year before were recognized as a Best of the Best for their Power Searching workshop at NECC in Atlanta.

Online teaching was the perfect part-time job for me. E-learning and online teaching replaced coaching and after school clubs as a way to supplement my income. I loved it! I was working with great teachers from around the world and learning new things everyday. I also realized I was opening a door to a new career. Eventually, after 25 years in a traditional classroom, I decided to take early retirement, and pursue my passion for online teaching and learning full time.

The five-course graduate certificate focuses on the strategies and techniques of teaching online. E-Learning Advice: Learn to write online content

After teaching hundreds of teachers to teach online, I've come to the conclusion that many won't learn how to chunk information on a page or write web friendly instructional materials based on simple modeling alone. I've assumed that seeing materials laid out in a web friendly manner, would cause e-learning teachers in training to to create materials using the principles outlined below.

Some catch on. They break text into clear short paragraphs. They use keyword headings, they write for scanning instead of deep reading.

However most don't get this seemingly simple idea. I hope this post helps more grasp the essentials of online writing!

No time for Tech Illiterate Teachers...

I read the following Fischbowl post several years ago and it got my blood moving. The author, Karl Fisch lays it on the line. This post was voted the most influential ed-blog post of 2007.

It's 2009 already and Karl's 'semi-rant' blog post remains a very relevant piece of work. This is a must read for anyone interested in online teaching and learning!

Let me add, that if you're reading this blog... you're at the front of the line and obviously working to understand and live in the 21st Century!)

The Fischbowl: Is It Okay To Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher? - Annotated
- Here is my list:
  
  1. All educators must achieve a basic level of technological capability.
  
  2. People who do not meet the criterion of #1 should be embarrassed, not proud, to say so in public.
  
  3. We should finally drop the myth of digital natives and digital immigrants. Back in July 2006 I said in my blog, in the context of issuing guidance to parents about e-safety:
  
  "I'm sorry, but I don't go for all this digital natives and immigrants stuff when it comes to this: I don't know anything about the internal combustion engine, but I know it's pretty dangerous to wander about on the road, so I've learnt to handle myself safely when I need to get from one side of the road to the other."
- 4. Headteachers and Principals who have staff who are technologically-illiterate should be held to account.
  
  5. School inspectors who are technologically illiterate should be encouraged to find alternative employment.
  
  6. Schools, Universities and Teacher training courses who turn out students who are technologically illiterate should have their right to a licence and/or funding questioned.
  
  7. We should stop being so nice. After all, we've got our qualifications and jobs, and we don't have the moral right to sit placidly on the sidelines whilst some educators are potentially jeopardising the chances of our youngsters.
- If a teacher today is not technologically literate - and is unwilling to make the effort to learn more - it's equivalent to a teacher 30 years ago who didn't know how to read and write.
  
  Extreme? Maybe. Your thoughts?
- Keep in mind that was written after a particularly frustrating day. I’ve gone back and forth on this issue myself. At times completely agreeing with Terry (and myself above), and at other times stepping back and saying that there’s so much on teacher’s plates that it’s unrealistic to expect them to take this on as quickly as I’d like them to. But then I think of our students, and the fact that they don't much care how much is on our plates. As I've said before, this is the only four years these students will have at our high school - they can't wait for us to figure it out.
- In order to teach it, we have to do it. How can we teach this to kids, how can we model it, if we aren’t literate ourselves? You need to experience this, you need to explore right along with your students. You need to experience the tools they’ll be using in the 21st century, developing your own networks in parallel with your students. You need to demonstrate continual learning, lifelong learning – for your students, or you will continue to teach your students how to be successful in an age that no longer exists

Tech Tip: Automatically Open Favorite Websites on Startup in IE7 and Firefox

For quick and easy access to your most frequently-used Websites, you can set up Internet Explorer and Firefox to automatically open those sites in new tabs every time you start up the browser.

For Internet Explorer 7:

1. Go to the Tools menu and choose Internet Options.

2. Click on the General tab. In the white space below the Home page caption, type in (or copy and paste) the URL’s of your most frequently-accessed Websites. Be sure to type each address on its own line.

3. Click OK.

4. Close Internet Explorer, then open it, and all of the URLs that you entered will open in separate tabs in the order in which you typed them.

For Firefox:

1. Go to the Tools menu and choose Options. (Mac users, go to the Firefox menu and choose Preferences.)

2. Click on the Main icon, and in the Home Page text box type in your favorite URLs in the order that you want them to open. Be sure to separate each URL with a pipe mark “|” (located above the Enter key).

3. Quit out of Firefox, re-open it, and your selected favorite pages will open in separate tabs.

I hear many teachers complain about the blank-eyed apathy they see in their students everyday.

I also know that there a many classrooms where the excitement is tangible and the eyes of all are on fire with interest. Clubbing creativity and innovation to death for the last 8 years has taken a toll on teachers and students. Perhaps it's time to shake a little disruptive technology on that bland test driven curriculum?

What if learning could be as fun as Appy Newz?

How many schools have banned cell phones? How many teachers squirm in rage while the kids text under their desks?

How many hours a week will this take?

Courses take about 5 hours per week. (You can certainly spend more time if you wish.)

Will I be working alone or with a group?

You'll be working with an online teacher who monitors the course on a daily basis. Our classes are fully moderated. That means you're working with a facilitator and other members of the class to learn together. You'll be able to get help, ask questions, and learn from both the facilitator and other participants.

What if I've never taken an online class?

We have an information rich, but low pressure learning environment. This class is a good introduction to learning online. Many of your classmates will be taking their first online course. Try it!

How will we learn online?

We take a hands-on approach. We use the Moodle online learning management system to organize and present our courses. Moodle is a popular online learning environment used around the world.

You follow a set of instructions that explain the goals and objectives of the course.

You watch online videos demonstrating essential concepts.

You refer to a glossary of technology terms to acquire a professional vocabulary.

The PowerSearching class uses discussion forums, learning games, and open book quizzes to introduce the concepts.

All classes have a Question and Answer forum that is monitored daily by your instructor.

What kind of technology do I need?

You need a reliable Internet connection.
- We recommend a high speed connection.
- Those using dial-up connects will need patience as the web-based materials load.
You need a MacIntosh or PC with an updated web browser.
- MacIntosh with Safari or Firefox
- PC with Firefox or Internet Explorer.
- (Most other browsers work with our Moodle learning management system.)
- You will also need an up dated version of Adobe's free Flash Player.
It is very convenient if you have access to an Internet computer at home and at work.
- However this is not a requirement for success.

What kind of computer skills do I need?

You should be able to navigate the Internet with your web browser.

You should be able to use email.

You should be familiar with word processing fundamentals.

You should be interested in learning new communication concepts.

By the end of the course you'll know more about both the course topic and web 2.0 concepts!

It really help to be curious!

How long will I have access to the materials?

We leave the course open for at least three months after the class end date. You can return and browse the resources on your own schedule.

Is Course Credit is available?

Illinois Educators can earn CDPU's for our courses.

Educators from outside of Illinois can earn CEU's

No additional charge for credit.
- However you must complete the required number of course assignments.
You can audit this class. (But you'll learn more with full participation.)

Quickly Toggle Uppercase/Lowercase in MS Word
In Microsoft Word clicking on a word and then pressing Shift+F3 makes a word change from all uppercase to all lowercase to just the first letter upper case.

Enlarge Text on a Web Page
Macintosh: Press Command and the plus key (for smaller fonts, press the minus key)
Windows: Press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys

Web Page URL Typing Shortcut
For Websites ending in .com, such as Amazon, merely type “amazon” in the address bar, and then press Ctrl+Enter (Windows) or Command + Return (Macintosh). This will put the http:// in front of the word amazon, and .com after it and will also take you right to the Website.

Jump To Address Bar in Web Browser
Pressing Alt + D (Windows) takes you to the address bar of most Web browsers. This way you can easily type in the next address instead of having to use the mouse to highlight the address.

Select Multiple Files At Once in Open Windows
Windows: You can individually select multiple files that aren’t right next to each other by highlighting the first file, holding down the Ctrl key, and clicking each additional file.
Macintosh: Same procedure, but press the Command key while clicking each file.

I've been teaching social bookmarking as part of my e-learning classes for some time. Social bookmarking is always a difficult concept to get across. Truly, it's something you need to actually do in order to begin to grasp the power of this web 2.0 technology.

On a basic level, you move your bookmarks from your browser to a website where you can get to them from any computer connected to the Internet.

On a social level you can build a trusted community of searchers who share their results by 'tagging' the content with descriptive words.

This technology lets you go beyond searching to sharing results and insights with other humans. Hear are some resources I tagged and/or annotated using Diigo, a user friendly social bookmarking service. Try it! You may like it!

Information Fluency Social Bookmarking Resources

These tools let you store and share your bookmarks online. Once you’ve configured your account and customized your browser it becomes easy to bookmark, describe and tag your Internet discoveries. Just click the toolbar icon and you will be prompted to save your bookmarks (including comments and tags) to the online service you have chosen.

Office 2007 users can now save any file as a PDF by installing a downloadable add-on file from Microsoft. After installation, a PDF option will be added to your Save As menu in eight Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

Tech Tip #2: Draw Quick Horizontal Lines in Word 2003 (Windows) & 2004 (Mac)
You can create a horizontal line across your Word or Outlook document with just a few keystrokes. Three styles of lines are available.
For a normal thin line, type three consecutive hyphens and press Enter.
For a bold line, type three underscores and press Enter.
For a double line, type three equal signs and press Enter.

Creating and Managing groups for E-Learning

In the E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate program at UW-Stout we like to limit classes to 20. Sometimes we'll get 21 - 24 students and have to make the decision to split the group into two classes or use grouping with a single course. I find that groups of about 15 are perfect. Otherwise I prefer to divide the students into different class sections.

Groups help you achieve a sense of intimacy and reduce the stress students feel when facing large numbers of unread posts.

Here's how I divide students into small groups within the course management system.

I start with a whole class icebreaker, then divide the class by alphabet into balanced sized groups.

I like to ask folks to post to their assigned groups first. Then give them permission to visit and post in the other group if they want. This is a form of differentiation for those high achievers who want to do it all.

At mid-term we change up the groups so everyone works with everyone else.

At the end of the course, in the presentation of projects and journals, we join together again as one class.

This allows 'smaller' discussions, while fostering a sense of overall community.

Additionally, I offer optional discussion threads open to all. This is another differentiation method that allows me to present value added resources on topics that may not appeal to everyone. (In my E-Learning for Educators classes this includes additional research into blogs, podcasting, and wikis.)
